Sony Ericsson Z1010 Review

These days 3G users are getting more and more choice and now following Motorola and NEC leading the advance of UK 3G services, Sony Ericsson came to the market with their Sony Ericsson Z1010. Released in January 2004 the brings a bunch of things to amaze all 3G users including long range Bluetooth and two cameras and it is also perhaps the only 3G clamshell so far with an internal aerial.

The Sony Ericsson Z1010 is a Dual-mode phone that supports UMTS (3G) as well as Dual-band GSM 900/1800 MHz with GPRS 4+2 (class 10), WAP 2.0, WAP Push with SMS, EMS, MMS, SMS Chat as well as SMTP/POP3 e-mail client and Wirelles Village Instant Messaging. PC connectivity is supported with Bluetooth class 1, infrared (IrDa) Interface and USB cable connections also supporting SyncML standard. It also comes with Java™ (MIDP 2.0) support and 32Mb of internal shared memory with about 28Mb accessible for storage and applications. Storage memory is expandable with up to 128 Mb Sony Memory Stick Duo™ (16Mb card bundled as a standard).

The size of the Sony Ericsson Z1010 might seem to be a bit large for a GSM clamshell but let us not forget that on average all 3G are larger and the Sony Ericsson Z1010 actually does wery well on this front measuring 98 x 48 x 28 mm, 115 g. It is equipped with Li-Pol 1000 mAh BST-15 battery providing up to 6 hours talk time and up to 200 hours standby.

As any decent modern folder phone the Sony Ericsson Z1010 is equipped with two screens. The main display is a brilliant TFD 176 x 220 pixels 65000 colours screen and the external secondary graphic (4 shades of gray) display is blue and has 101 x 80 pixels resolution (4 lines). What is less usual is that the Sony Ericsson Z1010 has not one but two inbuilt cameras. One small camera located near the bottom of the internal screen is wholly dedicated to supporting 3G video call functionality in QCIF format. The larger camera on the back side of the Sony Ericsson Z1010 has a VGA resolution of 640 x 480 with a 4x digital zoom, night mode, effects and also supports resolutions of 288 x 352 and 120 x 160 pixels. This twin camera design allows to divide video call and cameraphone functionality with one camera streaming audio and video and the other one also supporting video recording in 3GP format with sound. Photos can be easily viewed and managed with My Pictures photo album.

The Mobile Fun side of the phone is blossoming too with support for Java™ it comes with 2 pre-installed Java Games and more availablt to download. Multimedia functionality is provided by an elaborate Multimedia player with equalizer supports MP3, ACC and AMR audio and MPEG4, 3GP and H.263 video formats. It also has 32 vouce polyphonic ringtones as well as MP3 True Tones and supplied with MusicDJ™ ringtone composer (editor). With support for animated wallpapers and screensavers it also features Sony Ericsson Themes.

The support for the long range class 1 Bluetooth (up to 100 m) will surely be welcomed by all BlueTooth Fun enthusiasts.

Being an exceptionally able 3G phone the Sony Ericsson Z1010 has only one disadvantage - it cann not come to shops soon enough.
