Sony Ericsson K700 Review
Sony Ericsson announced the Sony Ericsson K700 on the 9 of March 2004 with sales starting in June this phone is amed to become the same sort of a "cult object" the Sony Ericsson T610 was in its generation. In terms of technology and features, however it is closer to the UMTS Sony Ericsson Z1010. The Sony Ericsson K700 opens the new K series of Sony Ericsson mobile phones designed to provide excellency in the medium price band.
The Sony Ericsson K700 is released in two versions: the Sony Ericsson K508 (where i is presumably standing for "international") and Sony Ericsson K700c sold exclusively in China. To clarify once again the Sony Ericsson K700 is a generic name for both Sony Ericsson K508 and Sony Ericsson K700c.
The Sony Ericsson K700 is the first phone by Sony Ericsson in this class having 32Mb of an in-built standard shared memory, FM-radio, TFT display (176x220), as well as Bluetooth support.
The Sony Ericsson K700 is a Tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz, with support for GPRS class 10 (4+2) and WAP 2.0. Mobile connectivity is provided by supporting SMS, EMS and MMS messaging and QuickShare™. It also fully supports Java platform (MIDP 2.0). PC connectivity via Bluetooth, infra-red (IrDA) port or USB cable.
Comparing with Sony Ericsson T610/Sony Ericsson T630 the Sony Ericsson K700, is 3mm shorter but a few mm wider which gives it a rather average but compact size and weight of 99 x 46.5 x 19.5 mm and 93 grams. The keyboard is made of semi-transparent plastic the whole style of the candy bar design is similar to the Sony Ericsson T630. Unlike many previous Sony Ericsson modela that had only one colour scheme the Sony Ericsson K700 right from the beginning comes in two colours Optic Silver and Blue Tinted Silver and we should expect more form third party manufacturers.
Sony Ericsson themselves are pround to point out the design of the Sony Ericsson K700 calling it dual front design. In fact it means that the back side of the phone where the camera lense is located now looks more like a conventional digital camera. However, with the brushed alluminium finish both fronts of the Sony Ericsson K700 look impressive indeed.
The Sony Ericsson K700 has impressive battery life with the actual talktime of up to 6 hrs and standby time of up to 200 hrs and it takes just 1.5 hours to charge up (the manufacturer claims that talk time is up to 7 hours, standby - up to 300). This model uses Li-Ion battery BST-30, 670mAh capacity. The similar battery you can see in Sony Ericsson T230.
The screen of the Sony Ericsson K700 perhaps the most attractive detail of the new model. For the first time a mobile phone of this class is equipped with a TFT 176x220 pixels resolution, 65536 colors display. Of course, it is not as impressive as the screen of the Sharp GX30 (QVGA 240x320 pixels, 262144 colour system CGS LCD isplay), but the Sharp GX30 belongs altogether to a different class. For the candy bar format the screen is extremely good providing superb quality of display and the picture looks lively and sharp. If you compare this screen to the Sony Ericsson Z600 or even to the Sony Ericsson T630 the difference is apparent.
The Sony Ericsson K700 features a decent VGA 640x480 pixels (0,31 megapixel) camera with x4 digital zoom and an inbuilt LED flash. In addition to still pictures you can also capture short video clips (3GP format) with sound! Combined with a built-in Sony Ericsson QuickShare system it makes sending pictures to your friends a really simple task. The camera also has a very unusual but equally amusing function allowing to take several pictures in a row creating an almost seamless panoramic view.
The Mobile Fun side of the phone is quite well-advanced too, having polyphonic ringtones (40 tones), as well as a MusicDJ™ ringtone composer (editor). It also features an in-built alarm clock, stopwatch, calendar, calculator, Email, screensaver, wallpaper, and games and support for downloadable applications, games, Java Games, logos and ring tones as well as 3D graphics support making the Sony Ericsson K700 an excellent games platform too. The Sony Ericsson K700 features an impressive audio support - can play MP3s and has a built-in FM radio.
All in all it is another brilliant example of Sony Ericsson engineering that takes a leading position in the class of middle priced phones in the bar format.
Interestingly, that although the Sony Ericsson K700 does not support external memory if one opens the phone and removes the battery one can clearly see a space reserved for a MemoryStick Duo™ slot that allows to suppose that mobile phones based on the same platform but with external memory support should appear quite soon and perhaps in the same K or in the T series. Also the Sony Ericsson S700 seems to be the continuation of the Sony Ericsson K700 theme with dramatically improved camera and in a different form factor.
