Siemens MC60 Review
Announced first in July 2003 the Siemens MC60 is the first camera phone produced by Siemens. In many respects it looks like the M55 model with an added camera function.
Staying faithful to their favourite rounded outline nevertheless managed to surprise the public by bringing in an interesting and ofiginal design evolving around the X-shape theme of the keypad area. The Siemens MC60 is available in three colours, Aquamarine, Titanium and Grenadine and using additional CLIPit covers coming in many colours it becomes possible to change the look of the phone in seconds.
The size of the Siemens MC60 is moderately-impressive being just 109 x 46 x 21 mm, 86 gramm. Li-Ion 700 mAh battery provides about 5 hours talk time and 10 days standby which is again about average.
The Siemens MC60 is a Tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz mobile with support for GPRS (4+1) class 8, WAP 1.2.1, SyncML and POP3/SMTP client with attachments support. It also supports SMS, EMS, MMS messaging standards and Java for applications and games. PC connectivity is via an infrared (IrDA) port and USB or RS232 data cable.
The display of the Siemens MC60 is a bit underdeveloped, particularly for a camera phone. It is an STN unit with the resolution of 101x80 pixels and moderate 4096 colours, (5 text lines) and if it is fine for all normal telephone functions it can hardly provide satisfactory display of images taken by the camera.
The screen also serves as a viewfinder for the camera and working at 5 Hz it provides a bit unstable image when you move the camera quickly. The camera itself is at the back of the phone and it supports JPG picture file format with max 352x288 pixels resolution (also 320x240, 178x144, 160x120) with 20-200.000 lux light sensitivity. Camera functions access is designed to be simple and quick as you can take a photo on the Siemens MC60 and send it to a friend in just two button presses by clicking the number 5 button twice. Strangely, you can not send your pictures to your PC via an in-built Infrared (IR) port, to be able to do this you will need to buy ether USB or RS232 Data Cables. Combining all camera functionality together it can only be marked as satisfactory, but not so bad for a first try.
Designed with the leisure market in mind the Siemens MC60 supports quite a lot of Mobile Fun functionality. It has 16 tone polyphonic ringtones, Java support, downloadable wallpaper, screensaver and Java Games.
Technologically the Siemens MC60 is not the strongest model by Siemens and having a good competition from both the Alcatel OT735 and the Motorola E365 this model can survive only relying of the attractive design with changable CLIPit covers and/or if it is offered in a lower price band.
