Sharp GX32 Review
Developing further already class-leading features of the Sharp GX20 model in Q2 2004 Sharp releases the Sharp GX32 which is a -free version of the Sharp GX30 that is the first 1 megapixel camera on GSM in Europe and also improves almost every other feature imaginable. Among the most important improvements are Bluetooth, MultiMediaCard (MMC) and Secure Digital (SD) memory card support and Quad-band connectivity.
Remaining almost the same size of 26 x 95 x 49 mm, 110 g it gains a bit of volume and weight but for a good reason. It becomes a Quad-band phone supporting GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / DCS 1900 MHz with support for GPRS class 10 and WAP 2.0. Mobile connectivity is provided by supporting SMS, EMS and MMS messaging. The phone retains a very impressive standby time of up to 250 hours and 3 h 30 mins of talk time with standard. In addition to the infrared (IrDA) connectivity it brings in USB and Bluetooth™ V1.1. Bluetooth™ in this phone also supports headset and car-kit profiles. Java™ is supported too.
The screen had been improved as well and now features Sharp Ultra-high resolution QVGA 240x320 pixels, 262000 colour system CGS (CG-Silicon) TFT LCD display and an external FSTN LCD, 65,536 colors, 64 x 96 pixels display as well. The outside screen can also be used as a viewfinder and it is quite useful for a self-portrait.
The camera unit becomes top-of-the-range featuring 1 Mega-pixel (858 x 1144 pixels) CCD digital camera with 7 stage digital zoom, macro mode and 5 picture sizes ranging from 858 x 1144 to 120 x 160 pixels. And in addition to all of these, the Sharp GX32 camera packs some unusual features as well. The macro/micro dial near the lens on the outside allows to optimise the camera for distant shots like landscapes or close-ups like portraits. It also has manual brightness and resolution adjustment. The circular protrusion on the outside shell acts as a flash that can produce 8 different colours and it is also possible to set the flash to "disco" mode where it scrolls through the 8 colours in sequence producing a flashy disco effect. It is not just fun but can be used for producing artistic effects with random flash colours in a continuous shooting mode thus producing pictures with different sort of light. And the flash can also be used as a torch light! Supported picture formats include PNG, JPEG, NEVA, GIF, BMP, WBMP, WPNG and it also features a built-in picture editor. The camcorder function also supports up to up to 400KB Video capture or playback so you can capture short video clips and play them on your PC using RealPlayer® as well.
Memory size of the Sharp GX32 also had increased to 8 Mb providing more internal storage in support for all these picture functions. More importantly however it now supports removable MultiMediaCard (MMC) and Secure Digital (SD) cards for storing videos, music and pictures place conviniently in an easy accessible slot (you do not need to open the phone and remove the battery like for example in Nokia 6600 to replace your memory card) which makes potential memory size to be almost unlimited.
On the Mobile Fun front it acquires 40 chord polyphonic ring tones, the ability to play MP3 files and install them as ringtones (truetones) as well as built-in ringtone composer (16-chord poly) and support for SMAF, MIDI, iMelody audio formats, wallpaper, screensaver and support for downloadable Java Games.
In fact you can hardly name a single feature that is not there and is not to the top specification! With all these features in place the Sharp GX32 becomes an undisputed GSM clamshell cameraphone champion that will be hard to beat in 2004.
