Sharp GX20 Review

The Sharp GX20 is a foundation model in the clamshell camera phone class offered by Sharp for the 2004. In the Sharp line it introduces dual colour screens as well as a decent 640 x 480 pixels VGA resolution camera.

Measuring 25 x 95 x 49 mm, 102 g the Sharp GX20 is a Tri-band phone supporting GSM 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz, with support for GPRS class 8 and WAP 2.0. Mobile connectivity is provided by supporting SMS, EMS and MMS messaging. The phone has a very impressive standby time of up to 250 hours and 3 h 30 mins of talk time. PC connectivity via an infra-red (IrDA) port or cable.

It comes with a Sharp brand clear and bright 240 x 320 pixels resolution 65536 colours LCD CGS screen, and an external colour display as well. The outside screen can also be used as a viewfinder and it is quite useful for a self-portrait.

In this model Sharp improved significantly on the camera front compare to the Sharp GX10i. The Sharp GX20 has a proper VGA 640 x 480 (310k) pixel CCD digital camera with a 3 stage digital zoom, macro mode and 3 picture sizes with storage for up to approximately 173 (small: 120 x 160 dot), 75 (medium: 240 x 320 dot) or 37 (large: 480 x 640 dot) digital pictures. And in addition to all of these, the Sharp GX20 camera packs some advanced features too. It has 4x digital zoom and on top of it there is the macro/micro dial near the lens on the outside allowing to optimise the camera for distant shots like landscapes or close-ups like portraits. It also has manual brightness and resolution adjustment. The circular protrusion on the outside shell acts as a flash that can produce 8 different colours and it is also possible to set the flash to "disco" mode where it scrolls through the 8 colours in sequence producing a flashy disco effect. It is not just fun but can be used for producing artistic effects with random flash colours in a continuous shooting mode thus producing pictures with different sort of light. And the flash can also be used as a torch light! The camcorder function also supports up to 20 sec video recording so you can capture short video clips and play them on your PC using RealPlayerŽ as well. The Sharp GX20 also has 2 Mb internal storage memory in support for all these picture functions.

The Mobile Fun side of the phone is well-advanced too having polyphonic ringtones (16 tones) with ringtones composer, wallpaper, screensaver and support for Java Games.

Current units available on Vodafone network are tightly tied in to the Vodafone Live! service, but fortunately soon after Sharp released Sharp GX22 which is a SIM-free and provider-free version of the Sharp GX20.

The Sharp GX20 has one of the most advanced camera functionality among GSM phones within the non-astronomic price range. Only Samsung offers very similar camera features in their E7XX series and we are likely to see a good competition between these two electronic giants in terms of pricing in 2004.
Recently Sharp intriduced the Sharp GX30 model that brings in among other things 1.1 megapixel camera and Bluetooth support.
