Samsung Z105 Review

Expected in the Q3 2004 the Samsung Z105 (SGH-Z105) is the first Samsung 3G (UMTS) handset in Europe, and the first 3G handset to be fully supported on the Vodafone 3G network.
In many ways the Samsung Z105 looks like a conventional Samsung clamshell, measuring just 95x50x26 mm and weighing 132 grams, which is only slightly larger than an average GSM clamshell phone. This makes it substantially smaller, but about the same weight, as the rival NEC e616 on the Hutchison 3 network. It supports both E-GSM 900/1800 MHz and W-CDMA 2.1 GHz. On GSM networks it supports GPRS (class 10) and WAP 2.0 as well as SMS and MMS messaging and Vídeo MMS on 3G.

Display screens are perhaps the most rapidly developing elements of mobile phones and in the Samsung Z105 Samsung engineers make another leap forward giving us 65536 colours not in the main internal screen but in the secondary external screen featuring also 96x64 pixels resolution. The main screen itself has a fantastic 2 inch, 262144 colours, 176x192 pixels TFT display.

Just like the Samsung V200 which pioneered this design solution, the Samsung Z105 has a swivelling camera that can rotate 180 degrees either facing towards or away from the main display, allowing the Samsung Z105 to be used as a videophone or conventional camera phone and also providing a convinient way of making self portraits. The camera itself is rather average, having VGA 640x480 resolution. but this resolution is more than enough for all advanced 3G services like Video messaging, Video Calls and enhanced content supported by the Samsung Z105.

On the Mobile Fun side the Samsung Z105 also supports Java MIDP v2.0 allowing to download and play Java Games as well as 40 tones polyphonic ringtones. It also supports SAT, Streaming Video and Video-on-Demand.

The only disappointment however that the Samsung Z105 features neither infrared (IR) nor Bluetooth having only RS232 and USB Interfaces. If the absence of the IR connectivity is understandable as this standard is gradually becoming obsolete, the Bluetooth functionality could have been a very nice addition to this otherwise extremely technologically advanced model.

Being such an advanced phone the will definetly facilitate the advance of 3G in the latter half of 2004 and throughout the 2005 as well.
