Samsung X600 (SGH-X600)

Released in October 2003 the Samsung X600 is a rear Samsung phone in a candy bar format. It is essentially based on the Samsung X100 model but with one substantial addition - it has a good VGA camera, however and as a result of this it happened to be impossible to fit an internal aerial into the same type of case so the Samsung X600 has an external antenna.

The phone functionality of the Samsung X600 includes Dual-band GSM 900 / GSM 1800 MHz support, with WAP 2.0, GPRS (class 10) and SMS, EMS and MMS messaging and Nokia Smart Messaging support and has message templates. Importantly it has Java support too. It comes with 8 Mb reserved for storage with 600 Kb reserved for Java applications and games. The Samsung X600 also outperforms the Samsung X100 in yet another aspect having infrared (IrDa) support in addition to the cable PC connection.

The Samsung X600 measures 102 x 42.5 x 19.9 mm, 85 g, and with 900 mAh Li-Ion battery it provides up to 3 hours talktime and standby time up to 250 hours. To make life a bit brighter it comes in Indigo Blue, Metallic Blue or Silver White colours.

The Samsung X600 features a good 65000 colour 128 x 128 pixels STN UFB screen display. The menu interface and structure are very similar to the E7XX series.

The camera that appears at the expense of an internal aerial seems to be worth a swap. It is a decent VGA 640 x 480 device placed in the usual for Samsung phones swiveling unit and beig able to rotate 180 degrees it allows shooting both normal and self-portrait pictures. It is also possible to hide the camera altogether by rotating it downwards (see pic.).

The Mobile Fun side of the phone (called Funbox by Samsung) includes polyphonic 40 voice polyphonic ringtones and with Java support, Honey Ball, Go! Hamster, and Bowling games permanently installed as well as uninstallable Chess Mobile and BubbleSmile Java games and the ability to download more Java Games it is a pretty decent Mobile Fun platform as well.

In the middle price band Samsung X600 looks like one of the most interesting phones as it combines cameraphone functionality with candy bar format.
