Samsung E710 Review
The Samsung E710 appeared on the market at the same time as the Samsung E700 and these two handsets are very similar indeed.
Let us not waste our time playng a "spot the difference game". The Samsung E710 has three major improvements over the Samsung E700.
• Firstly, it comes in several different colours (Silver, Coal, Titanium, Blue etc.)
• Secondly, it now has an icon menu in addition to the traditional one.
• The main difference however is a built-in flash that further enhances already brilliant camera functionality of the Samsung E700, that can also be used as a torch light.
• All other differences are purely cosmetic (slightly different battery shape, minute differences in case design etc) and you have to search really hard to find them.
Initially the Samsung E710 appears only on Vodafone network and here the main selling point is the tight integration into the Vodafone Live! service. However, starting from late Spring 2004 we are able to see a SIM-free version available for sale. It seems this very same version could also marked Samsung E715 (another example of the "confusion marketing" so common these days).
The E7XX line of mobile phones introduced for the first time clamshells phone by Samsung where a long and frankly very annoying external arerial disappeares being replaced with an internal arerial (Samsung likes to call it Intenna).
The phone part of the Samsung E710 supports Dual-band GSM900/1800, GPRS 4+2 (class 10) and WAP 2.0 also with SMS, MMS and Nokia Smart Messaging support with added support for vCard exchange particularly handy for business users. It also supports Java (MIDP 1.0). Being done with the external areial Samsung also reduced the size of the phone to a very impressive 90 x 45 x 23 mm, 86 gramms. It has a very good battery life of up to three hours talktime and a standby time of over a week.
The Samsung E710 is extremely attractive and stylish in terms of appearance but the real surprise is inside as when open it reveals a very impressive graphic TFT screen with 128x160 pixels resolution, 65000 colours. The secondary outer display is also colour having OLED 64x96 pixels resolution in 256 colours.
It has and in-built VGA 640x480 resolution digital camera. The camera feature itself is not new for Samsung mobile phones and had been around starting with the Samsung V200 model. In the E7XX line however the camera feature acquires a completely new quality with new services and functions introduced in this model. Not only it now has up to 5x digital zoom and light sensitivity can be adjusted from -3 to +3, but also it supports four different resolutions (640x480, 320x240, 160x120, 128x120) and four different compression levels (Super Fine, Fine, Normal and Economy) for JPG image format as well as a number of artistic image effects. Extremely convinient is also the fact that you can take pictures without opening the phone itself and with the external screen serving as a viewfinder you can take self portraits in this mode. It also features a built-in flash that can also be used as a torch light. Having 9 Mb of shared memory it provides enough room to store your pictures until you have time to download them to your computer. It can be connected to a PC via an in-built ifrared (IR) port or cable.
The Mobile Fun side of the phone is also quite well developed featuring Java (MIDP 1.0), polyphonic ringtones (40 poly), it comes with 3 permanently installed games (Go!Hamster, Honey Ball, Bowling) and two pre-installed Java games (Snow Ball Fight and BubbleSmile) that can be uninstalled and/or replaced with downloadable Java Games. Of course wallpapers and screensavers are supported as well.
All in all, the Samsung E710 is a brilliant phone and is likely to remain the leader in this class for at least a year along with the rest of the E7XX series.
