Samsung D700 Review

First announced at Cebit in March 2003 the Samsung D700 is on sale staring Summer 2003. It is the first Symbian based device combining the smartphone functionality with customary for Samsung clamshell format.

The mobile phone part of the Samsung D700 includes Tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz support, WAP 2.0, GPRS 4+1 (class 8) as well as SMS, EMS, MMS messaging support and SMTP, POP3, IMAP4 E-mail clients as well as Video Messaging through MMS and e-mail. It also provides PC connectivity with infrared (IrDa) interface or a USB cable supporting SyncML standard (vCard, vCalendar). With Li-Ion 800 MAh battery it provides up to 4 hours talktime with up to 100 hours standby.

The PDA functionality of the Samsung D700 is based on the Nokia Series 60 v1.0 UI platform with Symbian OS v 6.1 and therefore is quite similar both in terms of interface and functionality to Nokia 7650 and Nokia 3650 models also supporting Java MDIP. To accomodate this it comes with 16 Mb of shared memory accessible for applications, games and storage as well as with MMC (Multi Media Card) support allowing to expand storage memory further. It is also MS Mobile Outlook compatible.

Samsung put all of the advanced form factor features in the design of the D700. Not only it is the first smartphone ever in a folder format, but also it has a swiveling screen that can turn 180 degrees as well as rotating camera unit which altogether allows much more freedom for taking shots with the camera at different angles as well as for displaying pictures - the screen being used as a viewfinder can flip the picture according to the camera rotation degree. Being unusual and stylish it is also quite compact not only for a smartphone but in general terms as well measuring 89 x 49 x 23 mm, 110 grams.

The screen of the D700 made with TFT technology has 65K (65536) colours and measures 176 x 208 pixels (2.12 inch) providing brighter and clearer picture even under direct sunlight. The camera of the D700 packed in a rotating unit produces VGA 640 x 480 pixels resolution pictures but has a superior 310000 pixels matrix and 4x digital zoom function which improves the picture quality.

With Java support and MMC memory expansion the Samsung D700 provides plenty of opportunity for Java Games download and gameplay. The Mobile Fun side of the phone is expanded with support for 40 voice poly MIDI and WAV Ringtones allowing to play True Tones and is further enhanced with Video clip playback using Real One player and MP3 music player supporting MPEG4/H263, MP3, AMR, Midi fole formats.
It also comes with Voice Memo and Voice Recognition (Name dialing / Voice command).

Combining smartphone and smartphone with a folder factor Samsung achieved an unusual and interesting effect and the only thing that might become a drawback for the Samsung D700 is the abcence of Bluetooth in this phone.
