Panasonic X300 Review
Experiments with form-factor are becoming the latest craze of the mobile phone industry and now Panasonic decided to follow the suit with their Panasonic X300 model. Released in Summer 2004 this phone features the most unusual popup screen design - the screen can be opened in a way very much similar to camcoder screens.
As a mobile phone the Panasonic X300 is a Tri-band GSM 900 / GSM 1800 / GSM 1900 MHz device which supports GPRS Class 10, WAP 2.0, SMS, EMS, MMS mobile messaging and Java. There is nothing really outstanding here but all in all it is a pretty decent set of features for a modern mobile phone. Surprising, however is the abcence of Bluetooth or IrDa (infrared) connectivity which might make it harder to get your pictures to your PC.
Measuring 92 x 49 x 21 mm, 87 g the Y is smallish but not tiny. With standard Li-Ion 780 mAh battery it provides a decent talktime up to 5 hours and standby time up to 260 hours.
The 128 x 128 pixels 65000 colours screen, positioned so unusually is regretably CSTN (not TFT) which makes it a setback compare to most contemporary advanced phones in this class. An integrated VGA 640x480 camera features digital zoom and delay timer and the phone is also capable of video recording and playback.
The Mobile Fun side features 40 voice polyphonic ringtones as well as support for Java games.
The unique and so far unpresedenter feature of the phone is of course the one-push pop-up screen and although some may like it a lot, ultimately it remains unclear how exactly to use such a wonderful feature and why it appeared at all, apart from an obvious explaination that Panasonic engineers were eager to try the dechnology already well developed for camcoders in mobile phones.
