NEC e616 Review
The NEC e616 is the second clamshell handset released by NEC for the Hutchison 3 UK network and can be seen as a straight replacement for the NEC e606.
The NEC e616 combines impressive looks with feature-rich design that position this phone somwhere in the middle of the current 3G range. Although the size of it is a bit larger than an average GSM clamshell, all 3G phones are essentially bigger and the NEC e616 is doing quite well compare to its 3G rivals being smaller than the NEC e606. It measures 103x54x26mm and it is roughly 130 grams in weight.
Along with impressive 3G audio and video streaming capabilities the NEC e616 is equipped with an inbuilt GPS (global positioning system) allowing to get a precise location coordinates at all times. Unlike NEC e313 that has a full VGA resolution swivelling camera, the NEC e616 has two of them, one at the front and one at the back of the phone with zoom and pan-focus. But do not get too excited about this: both cameras are just 325x288 pixels! Clearly not enough to take decent still pictures, but for pictures I would use a proper digital camera anyway! It does however come with a light to help with taking pictures in darker conditions, and the resolution of cameras is quite enough for video calls which is what they are actually designed for.
The Mobile Fun side of the phone is represented by the extencive Java support for applications and games, video playback and recording. The NEC e616 is tightly integrated into the 3 network with a dedicated key to launch services.
Talktime is about two hours, which might seem too little compared to GSM handsets, but in fact all 3G handsets generally draw more power.
The NEC e616 is certainly an improvement over the NEC e606 and is selling well to 3G subscribers.
