NEC e338 Review

The NEC e338 announced in 2004 Q3 and released in December the same year is a middle range 3G handset by NEC in folder format with an external aerial aimed at universal, business user market segment.
The NEC E338 is a Dual-mode 3G (UMTS) and Tri-band GSM 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz mobile phone supporting GPRS Class 8 (4+1), with data speed upload 64kbps, download 384 kbps (WCDMA) data transfer. It also features SMS, MMS mobile messaging and supports T9 predictive text input functionality. It provides internet connectivity with e-mail support, WAP v. 2.0 browser and PC connectivity with RS232 and USB cable connection and it features SyncML and comes with Java™ MIDP v. 2.0 support.
The phone has fair 18 Mb of internal shared memory for storage, applications and games also providing 500 entries, 20 dialed, received, missed calls, 4 MB maximum for MMS (inc. SMS and email), 960 KB maximum for Java apps, 5 MB for individual files in phone memory.
The size of the E338 is rather average measuring 93.8 x 47.1 x 23.3 mm (89 cc) (weight 114 g) but for a 3G phone it is a good achievement. The handset is available in Black, Silver and Red casing. With a standard Li-Ion 1300 mAh battery the NEC E338 ensures up to 2.5 hours of talk time and up to 180 hours of standby time.
The NEC E338 has a large size 176 x 220 pixels TFT Colour screen and features a built-in camera with a moderate CIF 352 x 288 pixels (101376 pixels) resolution in a rotating camera unit for video calls and pictures. The camera is equipped with 2 X digital zoom. Picture management is enhanced with Picture Album, (supported Picture formats: GIF, PNG, BMP,WBMP, JPEG). The camera can also take video clips with sound.
The NEC E338 also features Autodial, Voice Dial, Loudspeaker Handsfree, in-phone Vibration, call functionality.
The E338 supports polyphonic 40 chords (voice) ringtones and has a built-in ringtone editor, Truetones support, 13 preset ringtone support. Multimedia functionality of the NEC E338 includes Multimedia Player (audio and video), Audio formats: MIDI, MP3, AAC, WMA, WAV, AMR Narrowband Video formats: (MPEG4 + AMR/AAC audio), WMV. On the Mobile Fun side it also features downloadable Logo, SMS Images, Wallpaper, Screensaver, Animated Pictures, Themes with Mobile Gaming support including Java™ Games support.
Additional features of the E338 include Calculator, Currency Convertor, Clock, Alarm, Calendar, ToDo Application, Organizer Functionality. The NEC E338 also supports Voice Memo functionality (20 seconds).

All in all it is a nice, compact and light device with no-frills video camera just sufficient for making video calls. Although large resolution had been sacrifised in this case the phone became smaller and lighter because of this and should certainly appeal to those who would prefer a smaller thing that does exactly what it says on the box.
