NEC e228 Review

The NEC e228 announced in 2004 Q2, and released Q3 the same year in August is a middle range handset by NEC in bar format with an internal aerial aimed at universal user audience. In NEC product line it stands above the NEC e313 and is aimed to replace this phone.

It is a Dual-mode 3G (UMTS) (upload 64kbps, download 384 kbps) and Dual-band GSM 900 MHz, GSM 1800 MHz, mobile phone supporting GPRS Class 8 (4+1), (32 - 40 kbps) data transfer with full support for 3G video calls and A-GPS services. It features SMS, MMS mobile messaging and supports T9 predictive text input, functionality. The NEC E228 provides internet connectivity with e-mail support, WAP v. 2.0 browser, xHTML browser, (xHTML 1.1). PC connectivity is supported with USB cable connection, Bluetooth™ wireless connection, and it also features SyncML.

The NEC E228 comes with Java™ MIDP support and has 19 Mb of internal shared memory for storage, applications and games also providing 500 numbers, 20 dialed, received, missed calls, 4 MB maximum for MMS (inc. SMS and email), 960 KB (96 x 10) max for Java apps in phone memory and provides Sony MemoryStick Duo™ external expandable memory support

The handset is relatively large (but this is normal for a 3G phone), measuring 129.00 x 54.00 x 21.00 mm (120.00 cc) (weight 125.00 g). The handset is available in Silver, Blue, White casing. With a standard Li-Ion battery the NEC E228 ensures up to 2.26 hours of talk time and up to 132 hours of standby time (Videotime: 106 minutes).

Remarkably the phone has a large size 176 x 220 pixels TFT Colour screen (2.0 inch, dual image video call) plus a secondary Monochrome 30 x 120 pixels 0.9 inch diagonal LCD). It is also designed as a dual camera phone featuring a built-in camera with a good VGA 640 x 480 pixels, 0.3 Megapixel (307200 pixels) resolution and a secondary CIF 100K pixels camera at the front for video calls. The main camera is equipped with 2 X digital zoom and picture management is enhanced with Picture Album, GIF, PNG, WBMP, JPEG image format support. The camera can also take video clips with sound (Streaming codec: Audio (AMR Narrowband, AAC), Video (MPEG4 + AMR/AAC audio), Windows Media Audio / Windows Media Video).

The NEC e228 also features Autodial, in-phone Vibration, call functionality and supports polyphonic 40 chords (voice) ringtones. Multimedia functionality of the NEC E228 includes Video on Demand (VoD), Multimedia Player (audio and video), MIDI, MP3, AAC, WMA, WAV, MPEG4 Video, WMV files, Stereo/Mono headset. On the Mobile Fun side it also features downloadable Wallpaper, Screensaver, Animated Pictures and Mobile Gaming with pre-installed games and Java™ Games support.

Additional features of the E228 include Calculator, Currency Convertor, Clock, Alarm, Calendar and it also supports Voice Memo functionality.

It is an excellent and compact 3G handset offering enhanced functionality in a bar format.
