Motorola V80 Review
The technical side and specifications of the Motorola V80 are very close to the Motorola V600. In fact one may look at the Motorola V80 as a Motorola V600 in a different form factor. In the design of the Motorola V80 Motorola for the first time unfolded the Haptics function that provides syncronised colour themes, multi-color lights and vibration to its full capacity. It is combined with an unconventional design following the tardition of the Motorola V70 which shocked the public by introducing the rotating opening design for the first time. The Motorola V80 elaborates on the same rotating technology theme but in an absolutely brilliant way.
The rotating function on the Motorola V80 is easy to use and features "auto open capability". It means that when you move the rotating part slightly it shoots up 90 degrees and automatically sets itself open (see pic. on the left) switching to the camera mode. The screen is visible at all times, and also adjusts its orientation automatically. It is set and ready to take pictures in a second. The drawback, however is that sometimes it could accidentally shoot open while still in your pocket (which indeed happens once or twice a month according to reports we have). Another inconvinience it presents for those who are lefthanded. If with Motorola V70 you could rotate the lid 180 degrees in both directions, the Motorola V80 opens only clockwise and only to 90 degrees. However, since basic phone functions can be controlled by the multi-way navigation key you will rarely need to open it when operating as a phone only.
And it is an absolutely decent phone as well. It is Tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 phone with WAP 2.0, WAP Push and GPRS(4+1). The Motorola V80 has a 176 x 220 pixel TFT 65000 colours screen unit, making it a high-quality screen for general use and gaming. There is a good quality VGA-resolution camera too, USB and Bluetooth PC connectivity and of course it supports multimedia messaging.
Another unusual Mobile Fun feature of this phone is peer-to-peer gaming with other Motorola V80s using Bluetooth. With the large screen, Java support and ability to use the phone with just the screen and navigation key visible, it looks like the Motorola V80 will be a capable and interesting gaming platform.
The most impressive feature of all, however is of course Haptics. Basically it has no utilitarian purpose at all, but you just need to see for yourself how it glares and flashes receiving an incoming call to appreciate it. Clearly inspired by the popularity of flashing aerials and keypads Haptics or something similar in its function but under a different name will clearly become "the must" feature for new generations of mobile phones.
The Motorola V80 is the direct successor for the Motorola v70. To reflect this succession the manufacturer decided to change the name and originally R880 is now known as Motorola V80 in order to point out similarities between these two models. This is an interesting case, considering that the company is still sticking to new title scheme for other upcoming models. Motorola v70 was popular due to the original mechanism of opening, but as the price had started to fall - its popularity was decreasing as well. Fashion phone users prefer having a unique, expensive phone to show off. With Motorola v70 when its price had lowered new consumers became attracted by higher-priced models, for a short moment the phone became mass and after that it disappeared from the market. It seems that the company made a decision that in this market segment mobile phones should not become cheaper with time, this means that the price of Motorola V80 is likely to remain the same throughout its life cycle.
