Motorola MPx220 Review

Just in January 2004 the form of Motorola MPx220 was unknown - on the picture available to us you could see the text "Not Finalised - Indication Only" but on the 24 of February 2004 during the 3GSM congress in Cannes Motorola had officially announced Motorola MPx220 and published its photographs and specifications. ODM developed by Chi Mei Communications the Motorola MPx220 as expected turned out to be not so much dissimilar to the Motorola MPx200, certainly the same clamshell design and the size are comparable. The Motorola MPx220 is the second device based on the Windows Smartphone 2003 released by Motorola (see also Motorola MPx).
The Motorola MPx200 is probably the nicest looking Windows Smartphone of the bunch, but it has been held back by not being as feature rich as some of its rivals. The Motorola MPx220 is designed to overcome some of these shortcomings, and it is likely to hit the market sometime in mid 2004. As it was anticipated when Motorola confirmed the exact specification the Motorola MPx220 turned out to be based on the Windows Mobile 2003 for Smartphone software (the Motorola MPx200 is based on the older Smartphone 2002 software), comes with Bluetooth and a built-in VGA resolution digital camera (the Motorola MPx200 has neither), plus EDGE high-speed data transfer. The amount of memory of the Motorola MPx220 has doubled compare to the Motorola MPx200 and now is 32Mb ROM and 32Mb RAM (compare to 16Mb of the Motorola MPx200).
The Motorola MPx220 will be equipped with Bluetooth and camera (some reports even state that it will have a 1 megapixel camera). The presence of Bluetooth is the most important because it will allow usage of such Bluetooth accessories as Bluetooth headsets and USB Bluetooth dongles and built-in Bluetooth in notebooks to use the Motorola MPx220 as a Bluetooth modem.
It has an inbuilt SD/MMC slot. Interestingly Motorola underlines SD memory card availability for this phone (and also for Motorola MPx200) as an important feature - and it really is important, because SD cards are faster, available in bigger sizes (now: 1 GB, next year: 2 GB) and cheaper than MMC cards used in earlier smartphone phones. Motorola MPx220 also supports SDIO and unlimited voice recording.
The drawback however is that it is not a gaming platform as Java Games simply will not run on this device.
The more the release of the Motorola MPx220 is delayed the more gossip builds up around it and now there are rumours of 1 megapixel camera and Quad-band. We can not confirm or deny these rumours, but it is indeed regretable to seeing that many potential users becomeing nearly fixated on this model and therefore delaying purchasing other models that are might be not as advanced (although many of them are actually more advanced) but already available on the market.
