Motorola MPx Review

Officially announced on the 24 of February 2004 during the 3GSM congress in Cannes the Motorola MPx (formerly known as the MPx300) is a Windows Smartphone 2003 based phone with a set of truly unique features. Building on the success of the Motorola MPx100 in this model Motorola added touch screen and built-in Wi-Fi (802.11b) functionality.
The model naming process recently adopted by Motorola is something of a mystery. In logical accession this phone should have had the name MPx300 as it continues the line of the top end of a range of phones starting with MPx - Motorola MPx100, then Motorola MPx200 and Motorola MPx220. Similarly now the coming clamshell Motorola V80 logically should have been named V800. Not very helpful if you are concerned about the numbers in the right order but what it can actually do as a phone, you ask?
With the Motorola MPx Motorola introduced a unique hinge design that allows the phone to be open in a "tall" configuration for making calls, and a "wide" configuration for use as a PDA. It also features a small QWERTY keypad, stylus input, a large 320x240 pixel 64k colours TFT display, a 1.3 mega pixel camera with a flash, WAP 2.0, WAP Push, GPRS(4+1), IR port and Bluetooth. Once again it looks more like a PDA you can make calls with rather than like a mobile phone.
It is one of the first mobile phones to feature a built-in Wi-Fi (802.11b) as well. However, the Motorola MPx is not the only phone to offer this feature. The competing Nokia 9500 also has wireless Ethernet and in addition it has a larger screen, but the Motorola MPx is much more innovative in terms of packaging. One key difference however is that the Motorola MPx runs Windows, while the Nokia 9500 is a Symbian based device, so if you are commited to the Windows platform, then the Motorola MPx is certainly the most advanced device of its type. It comes with massive amount of internal memory (32 Mb ROM and 32 Mb RAM) previously characteristic only for PDA class of devices and a built-in SD/MMC slot expandable with up to 1Gb memory modules,
The Motorola MPx has the same range of features you would expect from any other Windows Smartphone including great compatibility with Microsoft Office applications, email support (SMTP/POP3), web browsing with Pocket IE and Windows Media Player as well as unlimited voice recording. With the new Motorola MPx with its stylish but strict design and greater office functionality which makes an attractive hybrid mobile/PDA Motorola seemingly aims for the businesses segment of the market but this device is also bound to attract attention of gadget freaks like myself.
The drawback however is that it is not a gaming platform as Java Games simply will not run on this device.
