What is Bluetooth
In short Bluetooth is wireless connectivity. In other words, it is a way of connecting devices without wires.
Bluetooth, a technology standard developed by Ericsson, lets users interconnect phones, PCs, keyboards and headsets through a wireless link. More versatile than traditional infrared connections, Bluetooth does not require a direct line-of-sight between two gadgets to operate.
Until now, there were two ways to connect two devices together (eg. mobile phone and laptop computer): either a cable or infra-red. Now, with Bluetooth, there is a third much more useful and flexible method of connecting devices.
No need to talk about the disanvantages if wired connection but Bluetooth has many advantages over the infrared connection as well. Firstly, infrared is slow compare to the Bluetooth but more importantly IR is actually a kind of light only in the invisible part of spectrum. When two infrared devices communicate they simply flash and blink to each other - not very far from the way morse code had been transmitted before the invention of radio. Bluetooth however takes full advantage of this wonderful invention - it operates on radio waves. As a result devices can be connected not only at a short distance and not only within the line of sight (not to say about the superior speed).
All this allowed to introduce a whole new range of Bluetooth enabled devices. Starting from obvious hands free kits and headsets and ending up with Bluetooth games and toys.
DaimlerChrysler, Toyota, Toshiba, Sony Corp, Nokia and Microsoft are among a handful of manufacturers committed to the development of the technology. Unlike WiFi, or Wireless Fidelity, that can be found in Starbucks coffee shops and airport terminals, Bluetooth works only within a 30-foot radius of the device and is designed to replace cables.
Computer accessories maker Logitech plans to sell a sleek keyboard and mouse set that connects to PCs without cables. Motorola is launching snazzy high-end cell phones that can be linked to wireless headsets and digital handheld organizers. Carmakers are also hoping to abandon clunky hands-free speaker systems in favor of Bluetooth capabilities.
But why would you need it anyway?
First of all of course having a bluetooth headset in youir ear makes you look like a real secret agent. But seriously, it really comes very handy when you are driving! Especially now, when talking on mobile while driving is illegal without a headset. With bluetooth you can be on the right side of the law and still be very happy as there are no more annoying wires stretching from your ear to your phone.

You can now connect your phone to you computer or a laptop wirelessly! Forgot to say: if your phone does not have Bluetooth you can still use Bluetooth headsets and handsfree with a device that first connects you phone to a Bluetooth transmitter and this transmitter connects wirelessly to your handsfree. So the possibilities are endless!
You can also connect your Bluetooth enabled phone to another Bluetooth enabled phone in the same room and exchange messages, texts pictures and video for free!
