Mobile Phones and Crime
Every year, a lot of people lose their mobile phones. Last year alone more then 10,000 mobile phones were stolen in London. Two thirds of the victims were aged between 13 and 16.
How to protect yourself and your mobile
By taking these simple precautions, you can protect your phone:
- Do not carry them openly (keep it in your pocket or handbag).
- Avoid using your phone in crowded spaces.
- Do not leave your phone unattended, keep it with you.
- Be aware of the area you are in and the people around you.
- Use your phone security lock code or pin number.
- Property mark your phone with your post code and door number.
- Record your phone's IMEI number (see the IMEI tip).
- If your phone is stolen or lost report it to police immediately.
- Inform your service provider.
Always follow these recommendations:
Here are some usefull tips on how to protect youself from mobile related crime:
- do not flash your phone in public places - even if the temptation is high to let everyone know that you'v e got the lates and the most desirable gizmo in the world, if you do this sooner or later you will definetly draw attention of those who want this gizmo too but do not want to pay for it
- write down the IMEI number of your phone (can be accessed by pressing *#06# on your keypad) - when you report your phone stolen mobile operators will be able to block your phone from their network - this will not bring your phone back but at least you will have the satisfaction of knowing that thiefs are left with something of almost no value
- if you are particularly afraid of being mugged you can carry two mobile phones instead of one - have your old mobile you were about to throw away anyway, always with you somwhere where everybody can see and your real expencive mobile well concealed - this way if you are being mugged you can produce the old worthless mobile to muuggers keeping your real one safe (after all everyone is expected to have a mobile these days but it is not likely that after taking you mobile muggers will ask for a second one) :-)
